Take me on a trip

posted Wednesday, 10 October 2007
Things may be quiet round here for a couple of weeks. I'm going to the UK, for the first time in four years, to attend a wedding. In all, I'll be away about 10 days.

Of course, it ain't simple. First I have to get myself to Hong Kong. SurprisinglyWink, Liuzhou doesn't do direct flights to London. So, I’ve got to go the old fashioned way. I’ll take an overnight bus from here to Shenzhen. I have done this before and it has been reasonably pleasant (or at least not unpleasant). However this story in yesterday’s newspaper scared me a bit.

A night bus from Beihai to Nanning crashed and six people died, with many more injured.

Assuming I reach Shenzhen safely, I will walk across the border into Hong Kong. That can take a while. Although we gave it back, HK remains almost exactly the same as before as far as entry visas etc are concerned. I don’t need a visa. My Chinese friends do! However, the border crossing is the busiest in the world and getting more so as more and more mainland Chinese are allowed to visit.

I will be in Shenzhen around 7 am and my flight doesn't leave until after midnight, so plenty of time to hang about HK, doing nothing very much. I have a couple of friends to visit.

The flight is then around 11 hours. 11 hours of total boredom. I hate flying.

A few days of rushing around England like a madman, then back to sunny Liuzhou. I can't wait!

Actually, I just checked and the flight is 13 hours! Coming back is only 12 hours. Must be because it is downhill!
