The local cops have been impressing the citizens. At least, that's what they say. A couple of days ago, on the first day of the holiday, to celebrate, they proudly rode their shiny new motorcycles around the main shopping area while looking suitably thug-like.
According to local press reports, the local citizenry were delighted to see this impressive display of sacrifice to duty. Especially well received was the news that the cops were in possession of brand new guns and supplies of tear gas. Funnily enough, none of the photographers managed to catch a glimpse of these cheering appreciative citizens.
Perhaps, instead, the locals totally ignored the cops as they usually do. Or got annoyed by them riding up and down packed pedestrian-only shopping streets where motorcycles are banned. Appreciation is in short supply for these not corrupt at all, no siree, public servants. Who disappear home at 5:30 each night and leave the city to its own devices.
But what puzzles me is the tear gas. Why are local cops routinely carrying chemical weapons? What are they expecting? Riots to get into KFC? Or out? Subversion in China Mobile? Counter-revolutionary activities in the fashion shops?
