Suicide remarks are torn

posted Wednesday, 2 April 2008

CraneJust recently, Liuzhou has seen a spate of attempted suicides. No, it’s not disgraced party leaders doing the honourable thing. They have no honour. It’s just regular people. One chap climbed up a crane threatening to end it all and had to be rescued. And another distraught chap decided to jump off a bridge but was caught before he could leap.

China has one of the highest suicide rates in the world and is the highest for women. What is unusual about the last few days is that all the attempts have been from men, although this is normal elsewhere. China is the only country in the world which has a higher rate among woman than men.

Liuzhou is just bucking the trend.
