I don't want to go on about this, but I hope the nutters who decided to build Liuzhou's underground shopping mall in the town centre have read this article. It gives examples of bits of China which have developed holes where there shouldn't be holes. Including Liuzhou.
I should also point out that the mall, for which excavation has begun, is mere yards from the river which has an unfortunate history of regularly flooding the city.
In fact, the new mall is just under here.

laowai - the link to 'latest news about 'little sister' does not seem to
work. I've tried on two different networks. Could you repost or if it is
not too inconvenient e-mail it to me? My beijing contact turned out to be,
