Rising Damp

posted Saturday, 4 July 2009

FloodIt's a bit damp round these parts.

We are getting regular text messages warning of the rising water level in the river. Last night at 8 pm, it was at 83.13 metres. Today, at 1 pm, it was at 88.30 metres, which is 5.80 metres higher than what is considered to be the danger level. And it's still rising.

It has been raining heavily for three days non-stop.

It is also being reported that at least 50,000 people have been displaced as a result of flooding.

In Guilin and Yangshuo, all tourist boats have suspended service as the Li River is dangerously high.

Rongshui, a town in Liuzhou Prefecture to the north of Liuzhou city as the Rongjiang burst its banks. (Rongshui means "melt water".)

In Luocheng, also to the north of Liuzhou, 7,509 people living downstream from a reservoir were evacuated for fear that a dam might collapse.

If it ever stops raining, I'll go out armed with camera. In the meantime here is a picture from the local rag.

Now where did I leave my kayak?

July 4 2009 8:20 PM Liuzhou. My wife is in Liuzhou right now staying with her parents on high ground which never gets flooded. She tells me that the downtown close to the river are flooded and that this is a really bad flood. Shops have emptied and merchandise loaded on trucks to save it earlier today. Friends who live in high rise building close to downtown are now surrounded by water and fear they may lose electricity in the next few hours, their garage is totally flooded. This is a fairly common event in Liuzhou which is a fair sized modern city on the banks of the Li River. When the river is normal the river walk is stunning beautiful and the city is one of the most beautiful modern cities I have ever seen. I hope that when I go to visit in early August that things will be back to normal and we can enjoy walks along the river and the city parks which are so beautiful. I love the local culture and the music and arts that are on display everyday there. I pray that nobody is hurt in this flooding. If you are an English speaker by birth living in Liuzhou we would like to know you. Peter

Liuzhou is not on the Li River. That runs through Guilin and Yangshuo. Liuzhou is on LiuJiang (Liu River).

Yes, the flooding happens every summer. See here. The worst was in 1996, the year I first visited. I didn't live here until 1999.

Hi Peter: Your profile cannot be found. Seems both our wifes share a similar fate. May be we can have a beer or two at the "Brauhaus" when I pick my wife up next time on the way from Singapore. You can reach me here: agschlegel-mail@yahoo.de. Regards, ALEX
