Somewhere in the right hand column of this blog are the latest five Liuzhou stories picked up by Google News. They appear here automatically. Today, the top one is from a newspaper called €poch Times and is headlined "Petitioner Attempts Suicide at Supreme People's Court." Whether or not this is true, I have no idea.

The story also reports that "Dozens of victims of the forced evictions from Liuzhou, Guangxi Province... ...have just recently paid Beijing a visit again after the Chinese New Year." I was interested know about these Liuzhou residents who were evicted. The language of the report seems to indicate that it is a well known incident. However, a search of the newspaper’ site reveals nothing.

I can’t say I’m surprised. The newspaper is a front for FLG, China's favourite bogeyman. While I am no fan of the Chinese government and think that their reaction to this organisation is brutal and unnecessary, neither am I a fan of the cult. Some of their beliefs are positively nonsensical and dangerous.

Their newspaper is full of hysterical anti-China stories, unattributed quotes, unverifiable claims and stories which appear no where else (in this case not even in their own paper!).

As I said, their claims may be true. The local government are quite capable of illegally evicting anyone they like (or don't like.) But until I see an alternative source, I recommend taking anything that paper says with a large pinch of salt.

(Note: The newspaper site is blocked in China (surprise!) and references to flg are enough to get this site banned. Hence the name of the paper being disguised and flg being a picture file. If you wish to comment on this entry, then please do not refer to them directly. Any comments naming them will not appear. Thanks.)

Yeah I've certainly not heard anything about it either. Forced evacuations? As in we need to build something else here, or because you may be a member of particular organization?

I am leaning toward your grain of salt assessment on this one, actually you said "pinch" didn't you? A pinch is more than a grain. I say grain. I digress. Very clever posting by the way. Enjoy the weather while it lasts!
