Pawpaw Quince Carrot Sault

posted Tuesday, 12 February 2008

I'm confused. Again.

I'm partial to a bit of spicy heat with my dinner. If it's not actually in the dish, I like a nice bit of dipping sauce on the side. One of my favourites is this one. Made in Guangxi.

Hot Pepper Pawpaw

I spotted it a while ago in the local supermarket and the jar is nearly empty now. Must get some more soon.

A little earlier, during dinner, I examined the label a little more closely and discovered this elegantly put explanation of the condiment.

 Primitive Simplicity

Hold on a minute! The front says pawpaw; the back says quince. Now which is it? Nothing wrong with a little primitive simplicity, but what am I eating? I check out the ingredients list.

Carrot? I think not. Sault? That's it!

The picture clearly is of papaya, so together with pawpaw, quince and capsicum (Spanish pepper) they managed to mix up not three but four (or five, if you count carrot) entirely different plant species :)

Nothing Spanish about capiscum - it just means chilli pepper.

Seeing there is no actual expiration date entered - it could turn into a 'sault' of a deadly weapon : ( On a somewhat related note - what are the odds of a vegetarian enjoying long-term nutritional peace of mind and state of health in Liu Zhou? (I still miss the lily root pancakes....)

Oops, sorry. Neerlandicism (another word that don't really exist in the Queen's lingo) there. In my mother language Dutch chilli pepper is called 'Spaanse peper'. Weak defense: according to Google lots of folks did make the same mistake before me.
