Bucket Kicking Obelisk

posted Saturday, 9 February 2008

A few weeks ago, the locals erected this obelisk  in the least visited part of Liuzhou's pedestrian street. It depicts various scenes from what is meant to be the city's history.

Included is Liuzhou's most significant historical character, writer and statesman, Liu Zongyuan. (In China, click here.) As part of the Chinese New Year celebrations a bunch of the locals re-enacted scenes from his life.

I was amused to notice that the workmen who installed the obelisk left behind their bucket. That rickshaw man is about to kick it. Or maybe it does have some historical significance. All suggestions welcome.

I might email if you left me your email address. I will not text you. I don't give out my number to strangers I "meet" on the internet and suggest that you don't either.

Why do you want to meet me?

Notice how I've not offered to "meet" you. Gotta be careful...we Americans tend to carry guns, ya know! ;)

Ahem and anyhow...after ten days in LZ now, I have a couple of observations based on, well, nothing really...

Here goes: The bad: 1.Liuzhou people (men and women) spit MUCH more than the people in Zhuhai, where I live. 2. Women smoke much more here too. Literally ALL of my wifes female friends smoke. Weird. 3. God d---n I hate the pickled vinegar vegetable/fruit crap they eat. Luosifen, too! 4. So damn many KTV's for a second-tier city! The good: 1. LZ people are MUCH more "properly" dressed than those in Zhuhai. My wife says that this is because most people are local. Don't know what that means, but I see a lot of tennis shoes and much less alligator loafers and white socks. Ditto suit jackets with the tag left on. 2. LZ people use rubbish bins much more than those in Zhuhai! My wife says that LZ people are local. This makes sense. LZ is cleaner, too.

Random fact: I have only seen ONE pregnant woman here. I literally see one every day in Zhuhai. My wife says this is because Zhuhai is a "new city."

My observtions are based on absolutely nothig scientific and are only being written down because I am bored out of my f'ing gourd from the clack clack clack of Majiang tiles and Liuzhou hua.

Gran yi ruansi!

Cheers.

I can't say I've noticed the smoking. In all my wife's family and friends only Grandma smokes. Also, I like the pickles and Luosifen!

Liuzhou does have a bit of a reputation as a fashionable city. And especially the women dress well - in general. I mentioned this here.

Funnily enough, I daw TWO pregnant women in the supermarket, just yesterday. I think the rest must be hiding away at home.

Although there is another explanation. Last year, the Year of The Pig was a particularly auspicious year for babies to be born, so many people planned their pregnancies for then. This year isn't so good, so fewer pregnancies.

I see your wife is as logical as mine! Maybe she meant "Liuzhou people are loco!"
