Hot air in Freezing China

posted Friday, 1 February 2008
The whole country is paralysed by the worst weather in 50+ years. Half a million people trapped in one railway station. Millions more elsewhere.

Wen JiabaoBut don't worry. The Premier, Wen Jiabao has it all sorted.

"After 30 years of reform and opening up, we've accumulated a strong material foundation and, as long as we're vigorously organised, we will be fully able to vanquish the current hardship."

This is the formulaic trash they come out with every time. It means nothing. No one listens. Business as usual.

Every speech must mention "reform and opening up". This evening, I'm off to a government hosted banquet. It is 100% certain the speeches will refer to it.

People's Daily goes further.

"When one place suffers misfortune, aid comes from all directions. That is the traditional virtue of the Chinese nation and even more it is a vivid portrait of the superiority of the socialist system."

I've never met anyone in China who believes this garbage.

Come to think of it, I've never met a socialist, never mind a communist.

There is a terrible video of life in China's railway stations here. I recommend you have a look.

The crapologism that takes the cake is the "vigorously organised"bit. And the other beauty was "Zhao Guogiu, the in charge, was urging passengers not to cry and encouraged them to find other transport home". Like fkn what?

On a sadder note, how are they going to put a "positive slant" on those dead repairmen? Probably happened as some vigorously organised twat official neglected to take basic precautions...

"encouraged them to find other transport home"

Yes. That was a particularly stupid remark.

Freezing my barrs off in the drizzle here in lovely LZ as we speak, Anyhow, I ask this in all seriousness...how are you always attending all these government banquets that you write about? I have been invited to a total of, well, zero government functions in my seven years in China. I'm just wondering, that's all...
