Line Dancing

posted Monday, 10 December 2007
I have, on occasion, been described as ‘negative’. A scandalous libel! I am merely healthily cynical. And, only occasionally, something occurs which fails to justify my cynicism (for a moment or two). I then smile happily (for a moment or two).

Such a moment turned up yesterday. I was in the city centre and saw something I never thought I would see in Liuzhou. Something I thought so far beyond the end zone as to be truly unimaginable. The sort of thing which, if you saw it in a movie, you would say, “Come on! I know it’s fantasy, but…”

Bus Boarding

People were queuing up for the No.3 bus! Yes, standing in line instead of hurling themselves at the vehicle. There weren’t 300 people trying to go through the door simultaneously. Not a push or shove in sight. I stood there for several minutes in shock, shook my head, cleaned my glasses, took my medication and looked again. Yup! They are definitely queuing.

Of course they couldn’t do this without some politically correct assistance and there was a huge banner at the side of the bus stop urging people to be civilised and obey the ‘getting on the bus supervisors’. Oh yes bus boarding supervisors.

The No 3 route serves several colleges and is very busy – especially at weekends. The supervisors were local college students wearing sashes and red caps. You can just make them out in the picture. Here is one – she is from Guangxi Environment and Ecology College, one of the colleges on the bus route.

Bus Boarding Supervisor

It seems that last Wednesday was International Volunteer Day and these students chose to take part by line supervising. At the weekend.

Of course, I passed again this morning and the banner had gone, the students are in class and everything was back to normal.
