Boring Rubbish

posted Friday, 2 November 2007

In a rare example of honesty, Liuzhou Government has confessed to being boring. In an extremely tedious article on their website about tidying up part of the city, closing a night market and moving a "rubbish hill" they proudly state that:

Despite being boring, statistics can show that:

For dirty spots: for a year, over 4000 dirty spots were removed as well as 107.3 thousand ton rubbish. Some long-term dirty sports such as the ones at Maoshan Road, Liuchang Road, Zhanggongling, Niuche Village were also totally removed. Besides, the road washing was increasing for protecting air against dust. Regulations were made to road dirt, with over 400 cases of road-dirt punishments; and the water protection at upper Liujiang River was focused.

For disorderly spots: five disorders including stalls, parking, rubbish-throwing, posters and construction sites have been dealt with. Roads with illegal stalls and parking before are now belonged to the public again. 13 road markets have been removed in the past half year. Long-term markets such as Qingyun road market and Zhegujiang road market were totally removed. Besides, better parking arrangement also makes better road condition. 8,259 parking spaces were assigned in major roads at urban area.

For illegal spots: 4148 illegal stalls with an overall 728 thousand square meter were removed. Compulsory remove of illegal buildings was taking place at Shengli Block, Zhegujiang Road, Donghuan Road, Liutai Road, Guiliu Road, Yaofu area, Dule area. This improves order of urban planning in the city.

Yes. Couldn't get much more boring.

Quite typical. They proudly boast of removing night markets and stalls, whereas the only people who are happy with that are they themselves. I get the idea the entire place is turning into a giant facade - all life is being sucked out of the city just so it looks good. They add pedestrian areas, but the only thing you can buy there is clothes and phones. They add lights, lampposts, statues, and fountains, but there's no reason to ever go near them because there's nothing else to do there. The stalls and markets is exactly what made the place feel right; you could just walk out and do whatever it is you were intent on doing. Now, even if you want a late night snack it's at least a 10 kuai cab ride away.

Well, last I was there anyway. You seem to be keeping your head above water either way, Ken ;)

Totally agree Q. In fact it this is what I was saying 4 years ago when they started destroying the city square. That was a start; now they are destroying the city. It will soon get worse when they move all the government workers and the People's Hospital out of the city centre leaving it free for the endless phone shops and beggars.
