Official Flora

posted Thursday, 2 August 2007

China RoseNot many people know this, but Liuzhou has an official flower and an official tree.

No less a body than the Standing Committee of the Eighth People's Congress of Liuzhou City chose the two on February 13th, 1988.

The official flower is the Chinese Hibiscus or China Rose (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) and the official tree is the Chinese Banyan (Ficus microcarpa).

I don’t know about you, but I feel much better for knowing that!

I am however a bit surprised that a city named after a willow tree should choose another species as their official tree. That said there are quite a lot of trees in Liuzhou and they are always planting new ones or moving old ones.

But what I really want to know is why the committee were standing. Didn’t they have any seats? Perhaps they should cut down a few trees and make some.
