What is a Laowai?
Very simple. Laowai is the most common mainland expression for "Foreigner". The literal meaning is "Old Outsider".
It doesn't mean they think I'm old. 'Old' is used as a term of respect in China. Or, that's what they tell laowai!
This is what I hear people mumble, whisper, say, shout, yell at me on a daily basis when I am out and about. It can get annoying, but there is nothing I can do about it. So, I ignore it.
