In 2003, Liuzhou’s government decided to rebuild the city centre. This included changing the traffic routing system. A reasonably efficient one way system was developed throughout the downtown area, pedestrian only streets were established and once people got used to it, it worked pretty well. So, they decided to destroy it.
Some
idiot planner in some office has decided that we need an
underground shopping mall. I can’t find a single person in Liuzhou who agrees. When they built the last shopping development, the stores which moved in were the same old stores we used to have around the corner. Nothing changed! Nothing new. Yesterday Once More.
But, in the interests of socialism with Liuzhou characteristics, thanks to the generosity and wisdom of our leaders etc., blah, blah, blah, the underground shopping area will go ahead. And we will even have an official opening ceremony of the digging down to congratulate ourselves on our unfettered wisdom! Thankfully, I missed this!
To do this, they have to dig up the city centre. For the second time in four years. But this time, they have closed one of Liuzhou’s main arteries. Until July 2009. At a cost of a mere 200 million RMB.
(The underground city will be underneath this road. They don’t tunnel. This is open cast shopping mining!)
Of course, the traffic has to go somewhere, so they have returned to the old traffic routes which they proudly announced as having been replaced years ago. And they have re-rerouted traffic through Liuzhou’s oldest pedestrian street.
Idiots.
