China's 58th Birthday Party

posted Monday, 1 October 2007

Happy Birthday China.

Today is the 58th anniversary of the founding of the Peoples' Republic when Mao stood on the wall of Tiananmen and declared the republic.

To celebrate, as they do every year, the local government held a banquet for the local bigwigs and assorted 'people to be reckoned with'.

As they do every year, before getting down to the grub, the guests had to sit through a long dull speech by Liuzhou’s Party Secretary. Come to think of it, I think it was the same speech as last year! New guy, same speech! Then they proceeded to thrown down the free wine as if it was about to be confiscated any minute.

Anyway, your intrepid reporter managed to disguise himself as someone respectable and infiltrate the event to bring you pictures.

What these pictures cannot convey, though, is the sheer racket in the room. Chinese people don't have quiet, intimate dinners! So, in the interest of accuracy, I bring you this short video clip. Remember you get 18 seconds. I was there for over two hours!

Now that that's all over we can celebrate in the normal Chinese fashion - Go shopping!
