Bridge Over Troubled Water

posted Tuesday, 17 April 2007

Liuzhou is a city built upon a river. You are never far from the river. Having a river means we need bridges to cross it and so, there are a lot of bridges. Add on the occasional flyover or overpass and we could change the name to bridge city.

One of the more interesting pastimes the locals get up to rather often is threatening to jump from these bridges. Most only threaten, but some go ahead and jump. Some leap into the river and are fished out. Some drown. Those that jump off overpasses die.

Yesterday's local paper carried some dramatic pictures of young lady who had decided to do the bridge thing.

Doing the Bridge Thing

Poor girl. Just as she was enjoying the view before plunging, she was interrupted and hauled off the parapet.

Gotcha!

Hope she is OK.

Seriously though, China has the highest number of female suicides iin the world. By percentage, about five times higher than the world average. But then if you've met the men, you'll understand why! Wink

China has the lowest female to male ratio, it's not logical for the chinese to have a high female suicide rate. Given that each young woman has a large number of men vying for her affections.

Does he get to keep her now? It's only fair.
