Several times over the years, various foreigners in Liuzhou have commented on how little crime there is in the city. I always want to ask them how they have arrived at that conclusion.

Utility Futility

Sunday, 23 August 2009 10:35 A GMT+08
My heart sank immediately. There I was, 7:30pm last Wednesday evening, sitting at the computer doing some work against a deadline, when all the power to my flat died.

Slow

Sunday, 12 April 2009 10:04 P GMT+08
For reasons I can't work out, the internet in Liuzhou is grinding to a halt. It is becoming harder and harder to get into sites. It has taken me hours to get here

Turned Off

Thursday, 2 April 2009 10:13 P GMT+08
Sunday morning, I got up. That was an achievement. Wandered into the home office and found that I couldn't connect to Liuzhou's wonderful internet service. "Your user name or password is not valid."

Tuesday, 17 March 2009 2:07 P GMT+08
Another harrowing mental health tale has emerged from Liuzhou. In late 2007, I brought you the painful story of "the girl in the dark." Now we have an unfortunate young man.

san ba games

Sunday, 8 March 2009 7:36 P GMT+08
Today is International Women's Day (san ba, for short). Yesterday, somewhat bizarrely, I was invited to join one group to help them celebrate.

Today, the 15th day of the 1st lunar month is the day of the Lantern Festival marking the end of the Spring Festival for this year. It feels really odd as it is very warm. Last year at this time, we were freezing.I should have known better, but I too

Frozen Fish - Tilapia Trauma

Wednesday, 7 January 2009 5:23 P GMT+08
One of the things I miss around here is good fish. Not that we don't have any fish, but most of the fish are freshwater breeds which simply don't taste as good, or require pepping up with strong flavours.

Tuesday, 25 November 2008 12:47 P GMT+08
We are used to the mind-numbing slowness of China’s internet connection, especially with overseas sites. We are used to having to use proxies to get round their silly blocking. Now we have to get used to something new.

The Attack of the Killer Umbrellas

Sunday, 9 November 2008 4:32 P GMT+08
