Flying Chinamen

posted Monday, 30 July 2007

According to my local newspaper, the lads in the Liuzhou branch of the People’s Liberation Army are learning some new skills. There seems to be a shortage of aircraft at the moment, so instead, they are learning to fly under their own power.

Of course, once you have flown to your destination, you have to confront the enemy. It is, however, likely that the enemy will all have run away in terror on spotting so many flying Chinamen! In this case it is recommended that you bash yourself over the head with a beer bottle or attack an old piece of wood.

I think we're safe for a while.  If you are concerned, prepare yourself by learning some useful Chinese.

The "People's Army" trains/screams daily in the park just below my balcony. I've gotta say that it's a truly unsettling experience. On a side note, EVERY time I go to Liuzhou, I see the troops marched around in uniform in the downtown area almost hourly. Any reason for that? (Beyond the obvious...know thy role!) I never see that in Zhuhai.

I know the word 'chinaman' may be used w/o intent to offend but I would not use it in here.

I am a fan of your blog and admire the fact that you have the courage to live in a strange land for a long while. You must learn that chinese still has no enough confidence to overcome the word 'chinaman'.

Happy blogging.

If I avoided every word or topic which some Chinese people might not be 'confident' enough to overcome, I wouldn't be able to write anything.

Just that word not the topic, and not any other word. I am sure you know that word will offend many not just few Chinese if they read it or understand it. Unfortunately, we are not living in a perfect world.

But, hey, it is your blog and it is a free world.

I think you are overstating the case. So far, I have had precisely one complaint. Yours.
