As most people probably know, it is possible for websites to detect which country a visitor is in. Clever stuff.
What really annoys me though, are websites which detect which country you are in and then redirect you to a site in the appropriate language. MSN, for example, loves to do this.
MySpace has come up with an even better one. If you try to register for myspace.com in China, it automatically jumps to a Chinese version (myspace.cn). However, it does give this message:

Well, at least they give me the choice. I can click to go to Myspace.com? When I click on the link, it goes to myspace.com, which instantly realises I'm in China and sends me straight back to the same Chinese page.
According to wikipedia, Myspace "reportedly attracts new registrations at a rate of 230,000 per day." Not from here it doesn't.
I finally got to an English page by going through a proxy which mislead myspace into thinking I'm in Germany. Of course, I got the site in German! But there was a link to the UK site which worked. Not that I want an account anyway!
Doesn't surprise me at all... I still can't understand why the site has
become so popular. The design and user customs are horrible. It looks like
a lot of what was on the web in 1996. I couldn't believe on a recent trip
to the local bookstore that they sell a 'Myspace for Dummies' book. Who
buys this???
