Watching the River Flow

posted Sunday, 5 July 2009

Well, it has finally stopped raining. For now.

The river reached a peak of 89.62 metres (7.12 metres above the danger level) at 10 pm last night.

So, this morning I managed to get out. The flooding is much worse than I thought. Possibly the worst since 1996 when almost all the city was under water.

The area around Dong Men (the old east gate) appeared to have reverted to how it was years ago, with the market traders back on the street instead of in the basement market they were moved to. It was under water.

Wenhui Bridge was closed. (It reopened about 10 am.)

And I'm delighted to report that, as I predicted before they even built the stupid thing, the underground shopping mall was flooded, too. They were busy pumping water out when I passed this morning.

The pictures below were taken after the flooding had receded somewhat. There were many signs that it had been worse overnight.

How on earth did you manage to get out of your apartment with the main floor under water? I'd bet you just can't wait to let us know about THAT underground shopping street. I am looking forward for those great pics.

It's not my apartment.

Unfortunately, there will be no pictures of the flooded underground street. They closed it off while they pumped out the water and cleaned up.

Great pictures. Thank you. One question with regard to the underground shopping mall - do you actually need brains to become an urban planner?
