Mental Dental

posted Monday, 7 April 2008

For the last few days, I’ve had a nagging twitch of pain in one of my teeth. This is not good news. Dentists are not my favourite people at the best of times. Chinese dentists are a no go area.

I naively went once. In Xi’an. And ended up having a back tooth extracted without benefit of anaesthetic. They tried to give me one, but the batch they had had delivered was all fake and none worked. If you’ve ever had a tooth hacked out of your mouth by a hammer and chisel wielding thug, you’ll be with me on the great Chinese dentist boycott.

So, it terrifies me to find this advertisement in the local rag, today. Yes, it’s an ad for a local dentist.

Now, I don’t know why they see the need to include mug shots of the dentists, but you have to ask yourself, “Would anyone willingly go to a dentist who looks like this?”

Are you sure those are dentists? Because the ad says they're Otolaryngologists.

I had to look up Otolaryngologist just now. I think we just call em' ear nose and throat doctors in the states. I'm with you though, not near me either.

Yes. We call them Ear, Nose and Throat doctors in the UK, too. I had to look it up. But the person who left the comment is correct. They are not dentists. I just saw the dentist type chair and jumped to conclusions without reading the ad.

But my point remains. They ain't getting anywhere near my otolarynwhatever.

Actually I found the word on wikipedia :-) You're right though, the first one's eyes give me the chill in the bones. And the second one kinda looks like Hou Baolin, the "xiang sheng" master.
