Living in the Past

posted Thursday, 18 June 2009
I have been wasting a lot of time, enjoyably wandering through the good old British Library's new online collection of pages from British newspapers from 1800 to 1913. Well, the free pages, anyway.

Sadly nothing about Liuzhou, but that's hardly surprising. (Remember, if you want to search anything connected to China you have to use the old Wade-Giles romanisation.)

The stories range from the utterly mundane to the historically important. But all fascinating.

Here is one of the less important, but shedding light on colonialist attitudes, published in The Penny Illustrated Paper on Saturday, January 18, 1862.
