 Villas

If Liuzhou's officially corrupt leaders thought the "villa" scandal was going to go away over the weekend, they must be seriously disappointed this morning. Once again, the newspapers are full of stories criticising them. Not your ordinary newspapers, but the official mouthpieces. "Communist Party of China News", a riveting read, accuses them of ignoring public opinion, not caring about complaints and violating regulations. Have they just noticed? That’s what I’ve been blogging about for years!

People’s Daily, also under the direct control of the party, directly accuses them of corruption.

The news has also been picked up by overseas Chinese websites and I've had calls and messages from England, the USA, Australia and Hong Kong asking about it. I've yet to see anything in English. I suppose stories that Chinese officials are corrupt are good examples of the 'dog bites man not being news, but man bites dog is' theory.

Strangely enough, the only place I can’t find the story seems to be in the Liuzhou newspapers. What a surprise!

It all reminds of something a Chinese friend said a long time ago. "It would be impossible to wrongly convict a government leader of corruption. They're all corrupt." But, what seems to have happened here is that the current Liuzhou leadership has run out of friends in higher places (guanxi).

(Apologies to those who subscribe by email for the multiple messages over the weekend. A slight technical problem. Now, hopefully, resolved.)

They should be flogged for appalling taste also! -That ghastly 'Western' architecture!!! The old adage certainly applies here 'You can dress them up, but you can't take them out'!
