Taxi Tantrum

Friday, 29 February 2008 3:23 P GMT+08
The locals are amusing themselves again. It doesn't take much to attract a crowd round here. People stop and gawp at anything slightly unusual. This one got a bit out of hand, though.

Fanta-stic Names

Saved

Thursday, 28 February 2008 2:15 P GMT+08
Liuzhou?s Government are at it again. On their website they are ranting on about how beautiful the city is under their care and about how ecologically aware they are and how they are ?saving energy?.

A Travel Tale

Here is a touching little story from the depths of what is universally known as "the Spring Festival snow disaster" as reported in China Daily.

Street Murderers

Thursday, 28 February 2008 11:27 A GMT+08
I may have mentioned these horrible machines before. According to the local authorities there are 150,000 of the ?street murderers? in Liuzhou and the number is increasing.

Cabbage Tolls

Sunday, 24 February 2008 12:18 A GMT+08
It is impossible to travel by road in China without running into one of these every few miles.

Seeing the Light

Friday, 22 February 2008 2:23 P GMT+08
Last night was the Lantern Festival which is held on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar and which marks the end of the Spring Festival. I took myself off out in the evening.

Random Photograph #8

Thursday, 21 February 2008 5:13 P GMT+08
Random Photograph No. 8 Eighth in a series of pictures, taken in Liuzhou, which amuse me. A brave volunteer offers to clean my kitchen!

One thing which keeps me relatively sane, here is the easy access to western movies.

Fire, Snow and Smokes

Friday, 15 February 2008 1:28 P GMT+08
One of Liuzhou Prefecture’s main crops is sugar cane. In fact we are in the centre of one of the world’s largest sugar cane producing areas. You can buy sticks of it everywhere – a poor man’s candy. Can’t stand the stuff myself.

Out of pure generosity, I am going to pass on a couple of tips.

Stoned Pigs

Monday, 11 February 2008 11:10 A GMT+08
Here is a nice picture from the local rag showing the good people of Liuzhou lining up to purchase their pork in the local market. Why do they have this photo? An article about the rising price of pork?

Bucket Kicking Obelisk

Saturday, 9 February 2008 1:33 P GMT+08
A few weeks ago, the locals erected this obelisk in the least visited part of Liuzhou's pedestrian street. It depicts various scenes from what is meant to be the city's history.

Good Luck Bras

Wednesday, 6 February 2008 4:29 P GMT+08
It's New Year's Eve. My neighbours are busy cleaning and preparing food. Or hanging up their red good luck door decorations. Either that or having showers. It is forbidden to wash tomorrow. You would be washing away your good luck.

Snail Songs

Wednesday, 6 February 2008 3:57 P GMT+08
I?ve just found that there was a concert in Liuzhou last week featuring local musicians and their compositions. Sixteen different musical items were presented including a song about Liuzhou?s favourite dish, Luosifen (Snail Noodles).

Singing, Dreaming, Empathetic Rats!

Tuesday, 5 February 2008 8:32 P GMT+08
Here we are a couple of days away from the Year of the Rat. My friends and neighbours are busy cleaning their houses and hanging up good luck stuff. In the meantime, the crazies are coming out.

Stamp Collecting

Tuesday, 5 February 2008 5:06 P GMT+08
Like most people in China, I do most of my cooking on one of these. In fact, this is my new one! Bought it today! The old one died. One of the legs on the pan holder snapped off. The cold killed it.
