Don't Buckle Under

Thursday, 27 December 2007 10:35 A GMT+08
I'm intrigued by a new set of signs which have appeared on my route home. They are very sensibly advising people not to drink and drive and to use the seat belts provided. And not a drop of Chinglish to be seen.

Plunging into Christmas

Wednesday, 26 December 2007 2:30 A GMT+08
Well, I survived the great blog and bog blocks. Christmas morning arrived in its usual glory. The lane alarm ladies woke everyone up at 6 am by yelling to each other from opposite ends of the lane.

Silent Night. Not Quite.

Tuesday, 25 December 2007 11:56 P GMT+08
Christmas Eve was eventful.

Mall looks like Mall Shocker!

Friday, 21 December 2007 2:58 P GMT+08
I’m sorry but I have to return to this. I have finally seen an ‘artist’s’ impression of the new underground shopping mall which they are building.

Swiss Rice

Thursday, 20 December 2007 12:33 A GMT+08
A few weeks ago, I received a very polite email from someone in Switzerland who had stumbled across this entry on my blog. She asked for permission to use my picture of a rice field in some of her publicity material. Instead of charging my usual ast

The Hole Art of Photography

Tuesday, 18 December 2007 11:25 A GMT+08
At the weekend, my neighbour decided to install a new front door. This involved drilling into masonry and generally banging, shrieking and whining all day. So I went out.

Western food woes

Friday, 14 December 2007 1:44 P GMT+08
Liuzhou has an unfortunate history as far as western food is concerned. Western food restaurants come and go faster than steroid fuelled Olympic athletes. We have had all sorts.

Random Photograph No 6

Thursday, 13 December 2007 10:42 A GMT+08
Random Photograph No. 6 Sixth in a series of pictures, taken in Liuzhou, which amuse me.

Sea of Holes

Thursday, 13 December 2007 9:44 A GMT+08
I don't want to go on about this, but I hope the nutters who decided to build Liuzhou's underground shopping mall in the town centre have read this article. It gives examples of bits of China which have developed holes where there shouldn't be holes

Dig it!

Tuesday, 11 December 2007 11:11 A GMT+08
In 2003, Liuzhou?s government decided to rebuild the city centre. This included changing the traffic routing system. A reasonably efficient one way system was developed throughout the downtown area. So, they decided to destroy it.

Line Dancing

Monday, 10 December 2007 12:57 P GMT+08
I have, on occasion, been described as ?negative?. A scandalous libel! I am merely healthily cynical. And, only occasionally, something occurs which fails to justify my cynicism (for a moment or two). I then smile happily (for a moment or two).

Three Years - No Parole

Today is the third anniversary of the first post on this blog!

Zhuang Banner

Saturday, 1 December 2007 6:44 P GMT+08
Liuzhou is in Guangxi. Although Guangxi is often referred to as a 'province', technically it isn't. The official name is Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. This is because this is home to China’s largest ethnic minority, the Zhuang people.
