Photographic Failure

posted Wednesday, 16 January 2008
At the weekend, I went off for a trip into the wilds of north Guangxi. It was a pretty boring business trip, but the worst thing was the freezing cold! Too cold to take any pictures! Can someone please invent a heated camera!

The trip involved a few banquets, one of which was particularly good. It being winter, we had hotpot (lamb) but also a few dozen ancillary dishes came to prop up the centrepiece. These dishes included some parts of pigs which I never knew were edible. (I’m told it’s all edible - apart from the grunt.)

These I also forgot to photograph, as I was too busy attempting to get as close as possible to the hotpot burner, the only heat source I had seen since leaving home.

I did manage to catch a shot of the restaurant stairwell as we were leaving. I’d warmed up enough to hold the camera without shivering too much to hold it steady. Didn’t last long, though.

So, to make up, I am going to point you in the direction of a stunning set of photos of northern Guangxi by a Chinese photographer. Here are some samples. Click on the pictures for several more.

ah! The cold, I remember that all so well. Coupled that with a medication that made me feel cold, I was miserable at times. After, a hot pot dinner, we sat around some hot coals to chat. The old woman hack off a chunk of wood, I thought to stoke the fire. Everyone stopped this stupid laowai from burning a piece of sugar cane! memorable!
