Yeah! Right!

posted Wednesday, 24 January 2007
I've heard some great excuses in my time, but this story made me laugh out loud.

It seems that a bunch of the higher ranking Guangxi government officials have decided to set themselves up a golf team. Now instead of doing the little work they do between banquets, they can spend more time playing golf at the peoples' expense.

The justification for this is that it will "attract foreign investment and strengthen economic ties".

Yeah! Right!

As in most places, golf is exactly not a cheap activity here, especialy if you hire special golf coaches as they claim they plan to do. Here is a link to one of the golf courses in Guilin. You can see the prices. The daily green fee alone is higher than the average monthly salary.

By the way, I was born in St. Andrews, the home of golf - so, I'm allergic to the silly sport!

Favourite Golf Quote (apart from Mark Twain's "Golf is a good walk spoiled.")

"The sport of choice for the urban poor is basketball.  The sport of choice for maintenance level employees is bowling.  The sport of choice for front-line workers is football.  The sport of choice for supervisors is baseball.  The sport of choice for middle management is tennis.  The sport of choice for corporate officers is golf.  Conclusion: The higher you are in the corporate structure, the smaller your balls become.
