One of Liuzhou Prefecture’s main crops is sugar cane. In fact we are in the centre of one of the world’s largest sugar cane producing areas. You can buy sticks of it everywhere – a poor man’s candy. Can’t stand the stuff myself. Most of it is used commercially though to make sugar products.
The recent horrific weather conditions (by local standards) have destroyed amounts of the crop, causing great hardship for the farmers who depend on it and the price of sugar has rocketed.
So, it is particularly bad luck for the farmers in Rongshui, North Liuzhou who have now lost a further load to a fire.
In the wilder, remoter parts of the same county there is still a lot of snow. This is Miao minority territory. How lucky that they are that brave volunteers are braving the extreme weather to deliver food cigarettes. Liuzhou Tobacco Company is proudly boasting of their efforts to keep the villagers supplied.
It was probably them, who started the fire.
