Fantasy Train

posted Sunday, 3 February 2008

Do they think we are all mad? Do they really expect us to believe this nonsense?

The local paper is full of pictures of shiny, happy people enjoying the wonderful service on Chinese trains thanks to the wisdom and leadership of the government.

Fantasy Train

It is only days since Wen Jiabao, China’s Premier was sent scuttling from station to station to apologise to the masses for the total breakdown of the transport system (Funny that he could go anywhere, though!).

Wen Jiabao

Where are the baying hordes leaping through windows? Why is there only one person per seat and no scrums in the aisle?

I’ve seldom seen anything less like a Chinese train. Especially, at this time of year.

For an idea of what it was really like see the video I linked to earlier.

UPDATE: One man has been crushed to death in Guangzhou  Station. Story here.

I prefer this image of Wen with the bullhorn (or is it a loud-hailer??)...

I take it you are referring to this

The man with the loud hailer is not Wen. That is Zhao Ziyang. Wen is the guy standing behind his left shoulder.

Man, a little bit of snow and half the country is in chaos.

The point is that the snow has been falling for two weeks in places which normally never see snow or see very little and are therefore unprepared for it.

As to the chaos. There is a lot less than there could be. They genuinely seem to be doing their best. The priority is restoring power supplies which have been severely disrupted.

I am getting a little tired of people saying things like 'it's not that cold' or 'it's only a bit of snow'. Try opening all your windows, turning off your heating and then see what it feels like. Then leave it that way for a couple of weeks. That is the reality for many people here.

Aya. You KNOW what I mean! Semantics. Of course I know that was Zhao Ziyang. Ok, it's a photo with a bullhorn and Wen Jiabao in it. Gaoxing ma?

By the way...brought my retired cop father in law a HK copy of Captive Conversations. He can't put it down!
