Liuzhou Earthquakes

posted Tuesday, 10 June 2008

A few people have asked me if Liuzhou was affected by the earthquake.

No.

Then, I was asked if there is any likelihood of an earthquake here.

Yes.

It's very unlikely, but not impossible. There was a force 5 earthquake in Liuzhou in 1935. The previous strongest earthquake was centred on Luzhai, a few kilometers away, was force 3.2 and happened in 1483.

At the weekend, I was walking through Liuzhou and passed one of the many demolition sites. It reminded me of the earthquake pictures we have all seen so many of in the media. What was particularly unsettling was that the area used to be full of cheap ‘fashion’ shops and, when they were evicted, they left behind their mannequins. It looked like some macabre recreation of an earthquake picture.

I am glad I have found this blog, it gives me the chance to learn a bit about Liuzhou, my fiancee is there and I will be coming to spend Chunjie with them before I go to Beijing to study! I am glad to get a bit of a feel for what Liuzhou is like! I was very worried when I heard about the earthquke in Sichuan and was very relieved to find out that there is not much risk of a big earthquake in Liuzhou!
