There are many favourite local duck recipes and dishes. Beer duck is a favourite, for example. And duck hotpot is popular in the winter. I have even been known to make the occasional duck dish myself.
I usually obtain my duck by the old fashioned methods. Either I pop into the local supermarket where the duck lies dead, de-feathered and with the inside nasties removed. Or I can go down the local market, choose my live duck and take it home still quacking to despatch it myself. For the squeamish, the market also offers a poultry slaughtering service.
However, it seems I’ve been doing it wrong all these years!
The correct way to obtain your duck for dinner is to jump into the river and catch one! However, there seems to be a shortage of ducks, so you have to compete with other hungry duck fanciers.
Well, maybe not.
In fact, these people are the winter swimming club. Every day, even in the depths of winter they pop into the River Liu which flows through the city. A few minutes splashing around and they are as happy as ducks in the rain.
To brighten up their National Day holiday, the locals organised a Duck Hunting Competition.
I guess the prize for winning was to be allowed to eat the duck!
