Coffins Revisited

posted Wednesday, 5 January 2005
CoffinA couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that Liuzhou is famous for its coffins. Since then, I have done a bit of research and come up with this picture for your viewing pleasure.

Before you all rush here and make arrangements for your conveyance to the next world, please note that this particular coffin is a mere 18 cm long.

No. It's not designed for the miniature deceased, but is in fact to be sold as a souvenir of Liuzhou! Apparently, there is a thriving industry making miniature coffins for tourists to remind themselves of the happy times they had here in Liuzhou. Yours for only ¥85 (£6 or $10 approx). It's not slow! It is loading at a dignified, solemn and mournful pace as befits a funeral!

(Sorry about that. I've now moved the picture. Should be a faster load.)

You know so well about Liuzhou! I really appreciate your essay and come here everyday.

But there is an interesting fact you've ignored in your statement.
Actually the main purpose of the buyer of miniature coffins is this: the pronunciation of coffin in Chinese is "Guancai", which is the homophone of 官财,means "win promotion and get rich". It's something like a talisman!

Thank you for your interesting comment. However, I have discussed this with some of my Chinese friends (and family) and no-one agrees with you!

No-one thinks that 官财 means "win promotion and get rich". And they all say that, should they ever see a coffin, they mutter to themselves "汔夥楷笙!" to ward off evil!

The four Chinese characters engraved on the lid of the miniature coffin in your picture is "升官发财",which means "win promotion and get rich".
And the water mark on the upper edge of the picture is "官guan运连连,财cai运绵绵"
You have overlooked that ^_^

I haven't overlooked anything.

The picture is from an advertisement. There is a big difference between an advertiser's slogan and a popular idiom. Don't believe what advertisers tell you!

I still say that the average person, from Liuzhou or elsewhere, does not see a coffin and think "win promotion and get rich."

I konw what you mean now. And I belong to the average person ^_^
But there are some people do believe that the coffin bring good luck because of its pronunciation. And I have such one presented by my cousin.
And my father said that he can hardly believe that somebody present coffin as a gift, he said it's definitely a 陋习(I don't know how to translate this word exactly). ^_^

Exactly. I still got mine, I only found out a few weeks ago I could actually open it. Although I haven't quite found anything small enough to put in it...
