God's Communist Coffee

posted Sunday, 9 September 2007

Product naming and packing design is a complicated art. Not only do you have to come up with something attractive, but also make yourself appealing to a wide disparity of opinions.

So, I am thoroughly impressed by this Korean product which I came across in a Liuzhou shop last night.

Sheer genius! Marxism Coffee. If you’re going to sell coffee in China, what better name could there be?* And then, to hedge your bets and pick up the dissident element as well as the local sky pilots, add the rider “God’s favored coffee!” A big thumbs up sign in the corner and all is well!

I can just see God settling back with a cup of Marxism while he peruses the morning news.

Unfortunately, the effect is somewhat spoiled by the small notice informing the would be purchaser that the ‘coffee’ product contains 15% coffee. What is the other 85%.? The rest of the packaging is all in Korean, but I can’t see anything resembling a contents list. Not that I could read it anyway.

* Actually “Rampant Capitalism Coffee” would probably be a better seller. Or “I wouldn't recognise Marxism if it Bit Me in the Bum Coffee”

That's awesome! I'm definitely getting one of those on my next visit to Liuzhou. As for the other 85%, my Chinese coffee experience tells me that it's powdered milk (or more likely non-dairy creamer) and lots of sugar.
