If anyone has noticed a strange smell around here it may because on Tuesday all of Guangxi, including Liuzhou, switched from using gasoline and diesel to using bio-ethanol fuel. In two weeks time all petrol/gas will be completely phased out.
The local bio-ethanol fuel is made from cassava. Guangxi grows most of the cassava in China. The new fuel is considered to be more environmentally friendly, but also reduces China’s dependence on fossil fuels.
There is however an alternative view. The rush to grow fuel plants rather than food is leading to global food shortages and soaring prices.

What is cassava, anyway? ![]()
