Please note: This sad tale involves extreme foolishness, but has NOTHING TO DO WITH APRIL FOOL's DAY.
I may have mentioned Chinese banks before.
Last night, a friend who does occasional freelance work for me called me and asked me to urgently send her some fees which I had been holding for her. She lives in Hong Kong, but can nip across to Shenzhen and use her mainland bank account. Transferring to Hong Kong is much more complicated. (We only pretended to give it back!)
Anyway, I say, "No problem." and head for bed.
Today, I set out, cash in hand, to the local branch of her bank. Chinese banks open 7 days a week, but close slightly earlier on a Sunday. Well they did! I arrive at the bank I need to go to and see this pasted to the firmly locked door.

It seems that every bank in Liuzhou has decided it needs one day off every month, very sensibly they all do it on the same day and today's the day! Not only every branch of the bank holding my friend's account, but every branch of every bank.
I'm not one to begrudge the bank staff some time off, but do they really all have to close on the same day? Couldn't some notice have been given? (The poster is dated the 26th of March, but wasn't posted until last night.) Did anyone consider staggering the closures or were the bank leaders, aka "wunch of bankers", too drunk to stagger after their banquet?
One thing for sure. We will never know. Answering questions is not something they do. That would involve thinking.
