One of Liuzhou's most spectacular successes is not in industry. The city is famous throughout China for its culture, especially as represented by Liuzhou Song and Dance Troupe. The are constantly touring with their show, Ba Gui Da Ge, which consists of two song cycles, ‘Labor’ and ‘Love’. The songs are from the minority peoples of Guangxi, mainly the Zhuang, but also the Miao, Dong, Yao, and Jing minorities. The songs are accompanied by stunning dance sequences. The show has won many awards.
The troupe has travelled to more than 80 cities in mainland China, as well as to the United States, Switzerland, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong. They also visited Italy to represent China in an international folk music festival. Unfortunately, this success means that they rarely play in Liuzhou! I was lucky enough to catch them a few years ago and even managed to steal the mayor’s seat! (It’s a long story!)
The preface and all 30 of the songs from the ‘Labor’ and 'Love' song cycles are now viewable on Youtube.
Here is a sample.
Updated 5th August) to note that the two full song cycles have now appeared on Youtube.
The DVD of the complete show is now available here.
