Anonymouse

posted Tuesday, 25 April 2006

Like many people here, I regularly use Anonymouse to get round the blocks imposed on certain websites by the idiots who run this place. I am very grateful to the people at Anonymouse for providing this free service. However, recently I noticed something odd. According to Anonymouse's front page "This service allows you to surf the web without revealing any personal information." They then allow you to compare what information is revealed if you go directly to a website and what is shown if you go via Anonymouse. (Click on "Your Calling Card without Anonymouse" and "Your Calling Card with Anonymouse.") Very impressive. Only it doesn't work! I have a website. I get detailed information on every visitor. When I access the site directly the referrer program gives me this information:

Direct Access

When I access via Anonymouse, I get this:

Direct Access

Spot the difference? Using Anonymouse reveals exactly the same information (but adds that I am using Anonymouse!) For many people security is not such a big issue, but if it is for you, then Anonymouse is not a good idea. I have emailed the company about this, but have had no reply as yet.

Are you using Statcounter? It may be that you need to tell Statcounter to not record your own visits to your site. Create a blocking cookie for your own visits in the Install and Configuration options, then try using Anonymouse again and see what's recorded.

You seem to have missed the point Bluewave.

The problem is not what Statcounter is recording.

The problem is that Anonymouse categorically state that this information is not sent. It is.

hi, thank you for putting up the alert on this issue. I have found a similar problem. I dont know how to solve it. If you have found any other sites or programmes that allows users to view websites anonymously, please let me know. Thanks!

I use a number of methods to get round the Nanny's blocks.

Some are very straightforward, some more technical.

However, the one thing I'm not going to do is list them here. If do that, they very soon won't work.

I am happpy to share the little information I have with anyone I know, or who can be vouched for. There should be a contact me, button somewhere to the right.

Thank you for your reply. I have found some too but most charge its users. At the moment, I dont need them yet. When I do, I will come back to you. Best wishes.
