One thing which keeps me relatively sane, here is the easy access to western movies. They are available for next to nothing long before they hit the screens back home. Of course, the movie industry wails and moans about this rampant piracy. However two things need to be borne in mind.
 
a) If the film companies tried to charge the full price for real copies, no one would be able to afford them and so they would be in exactly the same position.
 
b) It is usually the film industry which supplies the pirates with the master copies. I just watched Charlie Wilson’s War. It is a copy from a DVD supplied for “Award Consideration Only”. In other words, it was sent to someone who has an Oscar vote who then sold it on. Who has Oscar votes? Yup. The film industry.
 
Anyway, a while back, as in years ago, I lent my mother-in-law my DVD copy of one of my favourite movies. I should have known better. It disappeared, as do most things in that house. Unfortunately, mother-in-law doesn’t.
 
So, since then I’ve been looking for a new copy of Ang Lee’s 1994 “Eat, Drink, Man, Woman", which I can’t recommend highly enough. I even tried ordering one, but to no avail. Today, I was in a different DVD store and spotted it! A mere ¥5 (35 pence UK, 70 cents US, €0.47). Bargain.

I just bought it when I spotted this.

Ang Lee Set

A two DVD set containing nine Ang Lee movies (eight which he directed and one he produced). Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hulk, Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil, Pushing Hands, The Wedding Banquet and Eat, Drink, Man, Woman.

Lust, Caution, I already have. The uncut version which is banned in China and therefore available in every DVD shop.

How much for this veritable cornucopia of filmic delight? ¥8 (57 pence, $1.11, €0.76)

Last night I watched Atonement. It was more expensive ¥10. I recommend it, too.

A DVD with a sleeve that displays material of even tangential relevance to the contents is a miracle in and of itself.
