Missing Mao

posted Tuesday, 8 July 2008

Today, one month before the start of the Olympics, the People's Bank of China have launched a special 10 Yuan note.

This features Beijing's "Bird's Nest" stadium on one side and ancient Greek statue, "The Discus Thrower" on the other.

What is most surprising is that, for the first time, the ancient Chinese statue, Chairman Mao is missing.

Only 6 million of the notes will be issued and already collectors are offering up to 300 Yuan for one note.

UPDATE: 12th July 2008

It seems Liuzhou was only allocated 100 of these notes. People queued all night outside banks in the hope of obtaining the notes.
